PHONETIC ALPHABET AND MORSE CODE CHARACTERS

When using telephony, words and call signs may be misunderstood because of phonetic similarity. To overcome this difficulty, the phonetic alphabet has been introduced. The pronunciations that follow are recommended for use by Amateur stations. Emphasis should be placed on the syllable which is shown in capital letters.

Up on soapbox

I find it particularly annoying when people make up their own phonetics. This international standard has been created to make it easier to communicate. When a station calls "Jamaica Norway America", I have to think "what was the first letter of each of those words?". When they use these standard phonetics ("Juliet November Alpha"), the letters come to my head without thought.
